The two first met at Ford’s art show in Williamsburg. Though Jen admits, “I went there with a motive because a mutual friend wanted to set us up. Whatever I did, it worked!” Despite their opposite personalities (he’s disciplined and tidy, she’s spontaneous and impulsive), their shared creative backgrounds and love for art, fashion, and queer culture quickly cemented their connection. Now based in Los Angeles with their two beloved dogs, they’re building a life as vibrant as the celebration that marked the start of their marriage.

Designing a Wedding That Defined “Queer Celebration”

From the start, Jen and Ford wanted their day to reflect their community and creativity. “We knew we wanted the wedding to feel queer,” Jen shared. “That meant questioning traditions. Having a drag queen officiate, walking down the aisle together, and making every choice intentional.”

They drew inspiration not from traditional weddings but from art, fashion weeks, and even nightlife. “It’s wild how when you search for ‘unique wedding ideas’ on TikTok, almost nothing new comes up. So we looked elsewhere. Luxury parties, gallery events, gay bars.”

As creative directors, they treated planning like a design project. “We must have made 15 different decks with possible color schemes, wardrobe, flowers, and entertainment.” That meticulous vision paid off.

Collaborating With Vendors Who Shared Their Vision

The couple dove deep into Instagram, searching for local vendors in Mérida who could bring their unconventional ideas to life. “We wanted people who got giddy about breaking rules,” Jen said. When they found Botanica Alfabeta, it was an instant match.

“We sent our deck, and they came back with their own presentation that built on ours in the best ways,” Jen recalled. The florists even created massive handmade daisies that framed the altar, turning the venue’s courtyard into a dreamlike garden.

Their planner, Junebug vendor Angelina Cárdenas Events, helped weave every eccentric idea together with seamless coordination, ensuring that even with bold design choices, the celebration ran smoothly from ceremony to afterparty.

Fashion That Broke All the Rules

Both Jen and Ford brought their fashion expertise into the spotlight. Ford collaborated with James Ford, a trans designer featured on Netflix’s Next in Fashion, to create a custom tailored suit.

Meanwhile, Jen worked with Claire Sullivan (who’s dressed Rihanna and Dua Lipa) on not one but two couture looks. “My ceremony outfit had a corset, an up/down skirt, and a headpiece Claire whipped together. For the afterparty, I swapped to a poofy skirt that flared out with a feather headpiece. I had a vision of my friends scrunching up into the tulle, and sure enough, that happened!”

Their shared sense of theatricality extended to the ceremony itself. “We got ready together. Neither of us could imagine doing it any other way.”

Creating Unforgettable Moments at Hacienda Sac Chich

When they discovered Hacienda Sac Chich, they instantly knew it was “the one.” “We looked up ‘queer-friendly venues,’ and the photos made us swoon. It truly was a match made in heaven.”

They leaned into vibrant design–primary colors, checkered floors, and sculptural florals. Creating a surreal yet romantic environment that perfectly matched the venue’s lush charm. The decision to ditch their $9,000 tent might have seemed risky, but it ended up being one of their best. “Guests got to see the great lawn in all its glory, and their jaws hit the floor.”

With Bravo Catering and Culmix Cocktails fueling the night, the party pulsed with joy, laughter, and a whole lot of dancing! Especially once their “find-each-other song” (“Gag On It” by Kim Petras) came on.

Staying True to Their Vision From Start to Finish

Jen and Ford’s biggest takeaway? Clarity is everything. “The more clear your vision is from the onset, the more your vendors can help make it happen. We changed a lot as we went, and I wish we’d just sat down and mapped it out earlier. It would’ve been less chaotic for everyone!”
