When two adventurous souls fall in love, it’s only fitting that their wedding takes place somewhere extraordinary. For Caroline and Daniel, that meant saying their vows inside a glittering blue glacier during their ice cave wedding in Iceland. What began as a quiet connection in Oxford during lockdown turned into an epic celebration of love, courage, and togetherness against one of the world’s most dramatic backdrops.

Their love story started simply—two Master’s students navigating pandemic life, meeting through Tinder because “that was the only way to do it at the time.” For months, their dates were walks through Port Meadow Park, always distanced and proper. “Caroline wouldn’t even let us hold hands at first! It was all very Victorian,” Daniel said. But through those walks, they built something steady and real, which later inspired a wedding that was intimate, personal, and rooted in authenticity.

What We Love About This Ice Cave Wedding

  • An unforgettable ice cave ceremony surrounded by glaciers
  • A private vow exchange followed by a black sand beach celebration in Vik
  • Caroline climbing an ice wall (in her wedding dress!) with crampons and an ice pick
  • Glacial-inspired details like translucent vases that mimicked ice
  • A design that perfectly reflected their adventurous, unconventional personalities

How the Idea of an Exotic Elopement Became Reality

After a winter engagement at Blenheim Palace—on the same spot where Winston Churchill proposed to his wife—Caroline and Daniel found themselves drawn to the idea of a small winter wedding abroad. “We fell in love with the idea of a small, exotic location,” they said. “Once we saw photos of Icelandic weddings online, we knew we had to make it happen before all the best ice caves melted away.”

They planned most of their big day themselves, leaning on the advice of local professionals familiar with Iceland’s unpredictable terrain. The result was a day that combined spontaneity with serenity. Their vow exchange took place deep inside a cave carved by nature, with blue ice walls surrounding them like crystal cathedrals.

A Ceremony as Adventurous as Their Love Story

Their private ring exchange and vow ceremony inside the cave felt surreal. Caroline even strapped on crampons and picked up an ice axe to climb an ice wall after the ceremony, still in her wedding dress. “It was quite a sight to see,” Daniel recalled. The moment captured everything about who they are: daring, lighthearted, and willing to go beyond the ordinary for each other.

Afterward, they celebrated with a more public ceremony on the black sand beach of Vik. The landscape’s striking contrast of dark sand and icy blue tones was a sight to remember.

Turning Their Vision into a Personal Experience

From the start, Caroline and Daniel wanted their wedding to be a reflection of their personalities—simple, wild, and meaningful. “It was a very small and cozy affair,” they shared. “That’s exactly who we are: adventurous and unconventional.” Even their decor followed the theme, with flower vases resembling glacial ice and muted winter tones that echoed the landscape around them. Every decision, from the location to the color palette, came back to what mattered most: crafting a day that felt like them.

Advice for Couples Dreaming of Their Own Ice Cave Wedding

For couples thinking about an ice cave wedding, Caroline and Daniel’s biggest piece of advice is to stay flexible. “The weather can change in an instant, and that’s part of the beauty of it. Lean into the unpredictability and focus on the experience.”

They also recommend working with local experts familiar with Iceland’s conditions. “They know the safest spots and how to navigate the ice. Having that local insight made everything so much smoother.”

The sun had already set by the time I landed at Dalaman Airport, leaving me in darkness as I transferred to a car. The drive to Fethiye, the first stop on my tour of Türkiye’s Aegean coast, felt like moving through a silhouette, with winding rural roads, the outlines of mountains, and the occasional glow of a roadside café. I had come to see if Türkiye’s “Turquoise Coast” could rival Europe’s best-known wedding destinations, and whether it could offer couples a truly unforgettable celebration. What I discovered was a place even more cinematic, and somehow still untouched.

When dawn broke the next morning, I pulled back the drapes to my first full view of Türkiye. The cove below me was perfectly still, almost like a lake, the water a clear, pale blue that caught the early light. No other hotels in sight. No noise except for the sound of birds. It was nothing short of magical.

My first view of Turkey from Hillside Beach Club.

I arrived with few expectations—and, probably naively, little research—but I left with a plethora of gratitude. The trip was unforgettable not only for the scenery, but also for the hospitality, food, warmth, and genuine care that define Turkish culture.

Now, I can confidently say this: the “Turquoise Coast” deserves a place on every couple’s travel list. Still relatively under the radar yet relatively accessible, it’s ideal for those seeking something beautiful, authentic, and not overrun with destination wedding crowds.

Why Couples Should Consider the Turkish Riviera

When couples dream of destination weddings or honeymoons, a few classics usually come to mind. Iceland, for its dramatic “fire and ice” landscapes. Mexico, for its color, flavor, and easy flights. And across the Mediterranean—France, Italy, Greece—for their turquoise waters and time-worn charm.

But there’s another destination that quietly combines the best of them all. Picture the rugged beauty of Iceland, the vibrant culture and cuisine of Mexico, and the laidback elegance of the Mediterranean—and you have the Turkish Riviera.

Street corridor in Bodrum’s town center

Towns Along the Riviera

Our group spent the most time in Bodrum, a resort town that could easily rival Mykonos or the Algarve region. It’s brimming with luxury hotels and top-tier hospitality but still feels rooted in history. The town blends old and new seamlessly—you can shop at designer boutiques one minute and tour ancient Roman theaters or medieval castles the next.

Further along the coast are Fethiye and Marmaris, two smaller towns in the Muğla region. They’re quieter and more intimate than Bodrum, with a strong sense of local life and community. Both are perfect for snorkeling, hiking, boating, and diving—or simply enjoying long, slow mornings over traditional Turkish breakfasts that stretch into the afternoon. Here, time moves differently, and that’s exactly the point.

The Resorts to Complete Your Turkish Experience

Showstopper Resorts

For couples dreaming of an unforgettable honeymoon or intimate wedding celebration, three properties instantly stood out: Maxx Royal Bodrum, The Bodrum Edition, and Scorpios Bodrum. Each delivers the kind of refined, five-star luxury that feels both indulgent and deeply restorative.

Scorpios Bodrum is carved seamlessly into the landscape, using local stone, timber, and plaster to create a warm, organic feel. It’s private yet elevated, grounded yet stylish. Our group dinner here was an alfresco meal of meze under lanterns while a DJ mixed ambient house tracks; certainly one of the most atmospheric moments of the trip.

Maxx Royal Bodrum sprawls across a private peninsula, where the water is impossibly clear and calm. The resort offers every imaginable option—from private villas and romantic suites to lively beach club days. You can dine at eight restaurants, including Spago by Wolfgang Puck, all without ever leaving the property.

The Bodrum Edition became an instant favorite. Known for its sleek modern design, homemade ice cream, and thoughtful service, it’s both luxurious and low-key. Its two standout restaurants—Brava by Chef Stefano Ciotti and the Michelin-starred Kitchen by Chef Osman Sezener—make it a haven for food lovers.

Outside Bodrum, D Maris Bay in Marmaris felt like a world of its own. The hotel’s Christian Dior collaboration brings subtle touches of couture everywhere—from poolside cabanas to in-room details. But the real draw is the setting: five private white-sand beaches (some adults-only), yacht excursions, and panoramic sea views. It’s the kind of place that redefines what a honeymoon can feel like.

Understated Gems: Relaxed Yet Refined

For couples drawn to intimacy over extravagance, there are a few resorts that balance luxury with a relaxed spirit.

Hillside Beach Club in Fethiye is perfect for honeymoons—or even the growing “familymoon” trend. While family-friendly, it offers plenty of serenity through its spa, private coves, and romantic views. It’s remote in the best way possible. My early morning swim here—just me and the still water—was one of the most peaceful moments of the entire trip. The resort’s culinary offerings are extensive, featuring a buffet that rivals any I’ve seen, and its three beaches (including two adults-only: Serenity and Silent Beach) give you plenty of privacy.

Avantgarde Refined in Bodrum harbor is cozy, contemporary, and ideal for couples planning a destination wedding. While less showy than the larger resorts, it’s full of heart, thanks to an exceptional staff and prime location. You’re right in the center of Bodrum’s energy while still having your own quiet, stylish retreat.

Planning Your Turkish Riviera Elopement or Honeymoon

So, why choose Türkiye? Because it’s for couples who love the coast but crave something more original. It’s for travelers who want their photos to make people pause and say, “Wait, where is that?”

For most U.S. couples, ceremonies here are symbolic (with the legal paperwork done at home), but that doesn’t make them any less meaningful—or beautiful.

Most visitors arrive via Dalaman or Bodrum-Milas Airport, both easily connected through Istanbul. Traveling between towns by car offers a scenic look at the region’s coastline and hills.

View from Maxx Royal Bodrum

Summer is the peak season, bringing both heat and crowds. Many resorts close between November and March, so the best times to visit are April–May and September–October—when temperatures are perfect and the coast feels more local.

If you’re planning a wedding or elopement, start with a local planner or one familiar with Mediterranean celebrations. And for your menu, lean into the region’s specialties—lahmacun (Turkish flatbread), pide (Turkish pizza), manti (Turkish ravioli), and döner kebab. For your honeymoon, add a Turkish hammam to your itinerary—it’s as relaxing as it is traditional.

Our Final Thoughts

By the end of my week on the coast, I finally understood what makes this corner of Türkiye so magnetic. It’s not just the sun or the sea—it’s the way time seems to stretch here. Every view, every meal, every breeze off the water feels like an invitation to linger, whether you’re celebrating a wedding, elopement, or simply taking a well-earned escape. The Turkish Riviera is where luxury meets ease: world-class hotels and experiences, wrapped in the warmth and authenticity of local hospitality.

By the time you’ve chosen a far-away destination for your wedding, sustainability may not seem like the easiest box to check. Flights, rentals, florals, and food all add layers of complexity to even the most carefully considered plans. But as wedding photographer Lyndsey Greene has learned from documenting intimate celebrations across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, sustainability isn’t about perfection—it’s about intention.

“True sustainability is most impactful when it’s woven into day-to-day decisions and habits,” Greene says. “Small, intentional choices—both during wedding planning and in everyday life—add up to meaningful change over time.”

In other words, the greenest destination weddings aren’t necessarily the ones that look the most minimalist or have the smallest guest count. They’re the ones grounded in purpose, guided by respect for the place, and planned with curiosity about how every choice connects to the land and the people who call it home.

What is an Eco-Friendly Destination Wedding, Really?

When it comes to sustainability, the wedding industry tends to focus on things—locally sourced flowers, compostable dinnerware, or pre-loved attire. And while those tangible details do make a difference, Greene believes the more powerful change happens when couples take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

“Sustainability is a holistic mindset,” she explains. “It’s about intentional decisions throughout the wedding, from guest count and travel considerations to venue selection and vendor practices. Couples are often making sustainable choices without realizing it, simply by being thoughtful about the decisions they make.”

An eco-friendly destination wedding, then, isn’t a rigid checklist. It’s a framework that encourages couples to think critically about how their celebration impacts their chosen location—and how their spending can, in turn, support it.

That might mean hiring a locally owned catering company that sources regional ingredients. It could mean finding a venue that invests in renewable energy or water conservation. Or it might simply look like choosing to host a smaller gathering, where travel and resource use are naturally reduced.

The Biggest Challenges of Planning Sustainably Abroad

Destination weddings come with a built-in layer of trust. Couples often book vendors sight unseen, which means sustainability claims can be hard to verify from afar.

“One of the greatest challenges couples face when planning a sustainable destination wedding is navigating the process from a distance,” Greene says. “It can be difficult to fully verify how materials are sourced, how waste is handled, or whether a venue’s eco-conscious claims truly align with your values.”

This doesn’t mean it’s impossible—it just requires a little more intention. Greene suggests researching local environmental regulations, reading reviews with an eye for how vendors source and handle waste, and leaning on recommendations from other eco-conscious couples or planners who specialize in sustainable events.

“With careful planning and the right local team,” she says, “it’s absolutely possible to create a celebration that’s both mindful and meaningful.”

7 Tips for Planning an Eco-Friendly Destination Wedding

Lyndsey Greene’s experience photographing intimate weddings around the world has given her a front-row seat to what actually works in practice. Here are her seven key takeaways for planning a wedding that’s as sustainable as it is stunning.

1. Start With Your Guest List

The single biggest factor in your wedding’s carbon footprint is travel. Fewer guests mean fewer flights, car rentals, and hotel stays—and more time spent deeply connecting with the people who matter most.

2. Collaborate With Eco-Conscious Vendors

“Every vendor plays a vital role in shaping a more sustainable wedding,” Greene explains. “When everyone on the team is aligned, it becomes much easier to create a celebration that’s not only visually stunning but also thoughtfully sustainable.” Look for planners, florists, and caterers who share your values and can advise on lower-impact options.

3. Let the Location Do the Work

Choose a venue that already reflects the kind of beauty you want to celebrate. “True luxury doesn’t come from excess,” Greene says. “It comes from intention.” A space with striking natural scenery or strong architectural design means less need for décor and florals, lowering both costs and impact.

4. Source Locally, Wherever You Go

Local vendors know the region’s seasonal produce, native flowers, and sustainable materials better than anyone. Hiring within your destination supports the community and reduces emissions from transport.

5. Rethink Traditional Décor

Consider secondhand or rented pieces instead of single-use items. Many couples now source vintage candleholders, glassware, or linens through local rental companies. It’s not only more sustainable but also gives your wedding a unique, lived-in beauty.

6. Be Mindful of Local Cultures and Communities

Destination weddings are about more than the scenery. Greene emphasizes the importance of understanding the place itself. “It begins with learning about the location’s history and the communities that have shaped it,” she says. “Being mindful means understanding how your celebration and tourism can impact the community, both positively and negatively.” Approach your destination with respect and curiosity—acknowledge whose land you’re on, and give back where possible.

7. Give Yourself Grace

No wedding is ever perfectly sustainable, and that’s okay. Greene’s advice? “Couples can do their best to make conscious decisions, but the reality of our consumer-driven world means it isn’t always possible to be 100% green. Even meeting some of your sustainability goals is an accomplishment.”

Your Questions About Eco-Friendly Destination Weddings, Answered

Are sustainable weddings more expensive?
Not necessarily. Greene notes that sustainability often goes hand-in-hand with simplicity. Smaller guest lists, locally sourced menus, and minimal décor can actually reduce costs. “Sustainability becomes achievable, and even effortless, when couples set their goals early and communicate them clearly to their vendors,” she says.

Can an eco-conscious wedding still feel luxurious?
“Absolutely,” says Greene. The key is to choose a venue or landscape that carries its own beauty. Think lush gardens, mountain lodges, or coastal resorts with a natural sense of place. “By letting the setting speak for itself, you reduce the need for excessive florals or elaborate décor,” she explains. “The most refined weddings often allow architecture and landscape to take center stage.”

How can couples make sure vendors are truly sustainable?
Ask specific questions about sourcing, waste management, and transportation. Review their online portfolios for evidence of local partnerships or reusable materials. “Transparency is key,” Greene says. “A trustworthy vendor will be happy to share the steps they’re taking.”

What’s one small change that makes a big impact?
Greene points to food sourcing. Choosing a caterer who uses local, seasonal ingredients can dramatically reduce your event’s carbon footprint. In one of her favorite weddings, both partners were sustainable fishermen and personally caught the fish served at dinner—a choice that perfectly reflected who they were.

Final Takeaway: Intention Over Perfection

Planning an eco-friendly destination wedding is, at its core, about mindfulness. It’s about slowing down enough to understand the place you’re celebrating, the people who make it possible, and the lasting imprint your choices leave behind. “I’d rather see everyone making small changes than only a few people making large ones,” Greene says.

Whether your celebration takes you to a coastal villa, a forest retreat, or a mountaintop resort, the path to sustainability starts with awareness. And when your day reflects that awareness—when every decision feels deliberate, personal, and connected—you’re not just throwing a wedding. You’re honoring the world that made it possible.

Set against the energy of the city that never sleeps, Nikoleta and Karleen’s Las Vegas destination wedding was anything but ordinary. They dreamed of a celebration that was timeless, and infused with bold color. What they created was an unforgettable journey through three distinct venues, each one revealing a new layer of their love story.

Their story began back in 2017 with a serendipitous match on a dating app. Nik was in London, Karleen in Southampton. “Nik had expanded her search radius a little further than usual, and I happened to be at a friend’s BBQ within range,” Karleen shared. One conversation led to another, and soon they discovered shared loves: tapas, village pubs, and travel adventures. Over the years, they built a beautiful life together, welcoming their son in 2022 and their daughter in 2025, before saying “I do” in a city that has always captured their sense of fun and spontaneity.

What We Love About This Las Vegas Destination Wedding

  • Three unique venues showcasing different sides of Las Vegas
  • A color palette of deep greens, terracotta, navy, and jewel tones
  • A female Elvis officiant for the ceremony
  • A dinner party featuring chef-curated dishes, premium wines, and maximalist decor
  • A rooftop after-party overlooking the Strip

Hosting Welcome Drinks to Kick Off the Celebration

Since many guests hadn’t met before, Nikoleta and Karleen wanted to set the tone early. They hosted a relaxed rooftop welcome party overlooking the city, where long tables encouraged mingling and conversations flowed effortlessly. “We made it a point to personally introduce as many guests as possible.” They also created a wedding website to share all event details, which kept everyone informed and excited for the weekend ahead.

A Playful Yet Personal Las Vegas Ceremony

Their wedding day began in true Vegas style. Rather than doing a traditional first look, the brides got ready together in their hotel suite, sharing quiet excitement before the big day. “As best friends, it just felt natural.”

When the time came, they walked hand in hand down the aisle to a serenade from a female Elvis, an unforgettable twist that had everyone smiling. “We wanted to start this new chapter side by side,” they explained. “It felt symbolic of our journey.”

After saying “I do,” they stopped at the chapel’s retro photo booth for their first snapshots as newlyweds. Then, joined by guests, they headed to one of the oldest dive bars in Old Town Las Vegas. “The locals even bought us whiskey shots. They were definitely stronger than expected, but it made the moment even more memorable!”

Fashion That Reflected Two Personalities

With two brides and scorching Las Vegas heat in June, finding the right looks required balance. “Comfort was key, but we also wanted to reflect our individual styles.” Karleen chose sleek, modern lines with a hint of Vegas flair, while Nik opted for a look inspired by Hollywood glamour. Minimal makeup and simple hairstyles allowed their jewelry and dresses to stand out. Instead of bridesmaids, they encouraged guests to wear cocktail attire, creating a coordinated yet effortless aesthetic that complemented their bold color palette.

Crafting a Wedding Vision That Blended Tradition and Bold Design

When the couple first started planning, they knew they wanted a wedding that felt “timeless but uniquely us.” With guests flying in from the UK, their goal was to create an immersive experience rather than a one-day event.

Their color palette alone set the tone for their Las Vegas destination wedding. A daring mix of deep greens, terracotta, navy, and jewel tones layered with gold accents, tropical foliage, fruit-filled tables, and colored glassware. “When our design team shared a snippet online, people couldn’t picture how it would all come together,” they said. “But we trusted the vision, and the end result was absolutely stunning.”

The couple worked closely with Junebug vendor Ember & Stone Events to bring their ideas to life. “Working with Niki was amazing. She had this way of taking our jumble of thoughts, smiling, and somehow making it all happen,” they recalled. Over nine months, the team refined every detail, from venue coordination and transport logistics to styling, catering, and budget management.

Building the Dream Team for a Destination Wedding

Planning from overseas meant having a local expert was essential. “Honestly, this is where Niki’s expertise was invaluable,” the couple said. “She introduced us to incredible vendors, from photographers and florists to stationery designers and makeup artists, so we didn’t have to spend hours researching on our own.”

They credit Ember & Stone for helping them balance vision with practicality. “Niki helped us understand how our budget translated into real-world costs. Even small things like the logistics of linen delivery or weekend service fees were factored in. It saved us from surprises and made sure everything ran smoothly.”

Their biggest splurge? Guest experience. “We prioritized amazing food, drinks, and entertainment. It wasn’t inexpensive, but it was absolutely worth it. With Ember & Stone’s guidance, we got the unforgettable day we envisioned without overspending.”

A Dinner Experience Worth Remembering

For the dinner reception, the couple chose an elegant venue known for its cuisine. “As foodies, we wanted the meal to be a highlight,” they said. “The chef-curated menu and premium wines made it feel like an indulgent dinner party.”

The decor featured warm candlelight, gold bird accents, and jewel-toned florals that echoed the overall design concept. Guests raved about the menu, with the filet mignon becoming the star of the evening.

Dancing, Drinks, and an Iconic Vegas Finale

The celebration didn’t end there. After dinner, everyone headed to the final venue. A rooftop lounge with sweeping views of the Strip. The city lights provided a dazzling backdrop as their DJ kept the energy high into the early hours. “The rooftop view overlooking the iconic Strip was hands down the highlight.”

To cap off the night, they and their guests made one last stop: the famous Las Vegas sign, where they snapped a group photo that perfectly ended the night with an iconic moment.

Their Best Advice for Couples Planning a Las Vegas Destination Wedding

Looking back, Nikoleta and Karleen wouldn’t change a thing. But they admit that juggling multiple venues came with challenges. “It was wonderful to experience each space, but moving between locations sometimes broke the flow. Our guests were amazing, though, and kept the energy up all day.”

Their biggest piece of advice? “Hire a planner who’s also a designer,” they emphasized. “Having someone who understands both logistics and aesthetics is invaluable. Niki and the Ember & Stone team brought clarity, creativity, and confidence to the process. We truly couldn’t have done it without them.”

Amanda and Parsa met on Hinge in the summer of 2020 while staying with their families in Orange County. Their early days were spent like teenagers—on beaches, hikes, and outdoor dinners—before both returned to New York. By July 2021, they officially began dating, realizing they were the happiest when coming home to each other. “We’re wildly compatible travel partners,” Amanda shared. “And it doesn’t hurt that our parents are now best friends.”

When it came time to plan their destination celebration, they chose San Miguel de Allende for its vibrant colors and historic charm. Their Instituto Allende wedding beautifully merged Persian traditions with Mexican flair, all brought to life by an incredible team of vendors.

What We Love About This Instituto Allende Wedding

  • A welcome rooftop party overlooking the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel
  • The bold and colorful design inspired by San Miguel’s streets and architecture
  • A Persian Sofreh Aghd ceremony infused with Mexican music and traditions
  • Amanda’s three distinct fashion looks throughout the weekend
  • Personal touches like hookahs, custom tequila bottles, and a live first dance performance

A Rooftop Welcome Party

To kick off the weekend, Amanda and Parsa welcomed their guests with a lively rooftop party at Terraza Trinitate. Inspired by classic blue-and-white azulejos tiles, the celebration featured tacos, heart-shaped churros, and plenty of cocktails.

Under the skyline view of the Parroquia, guests mingled while Parsa’s nieces emceed the evening. A tequila and mezcal tasting table kept the energy high, perfectly matching the atmosphere Amanda described as “relaxed but super high energy. It was the perfect way to start the weekend.”

Adding to the vibrancy of the night, Amanda chose a bold fashion-forward look: a gold Markarian brocade mini dress with flowing ribbons, paired with Giuseppe Zanotti heels and vintage accessories.

Finding the Right Planner for a Destination Wedding

The couple quickly realized that planning from afar required a trusted guide. After interviewing several planners, they knew Junebug vendor Bougainvillea Weddings was the perfect fit.

“Her background as a floral designer was important to us,” Amanda explained. “We wanted a planner with strong creative vision and impeccable style, and Estela has that.” She also brought expertise in Persian ceremonies and deep local connections, ensuring every detail was cohesive and high quality. “Estela and her team brought everything together so beautifully.”

JB Tip: Choose a planner whose strengths complement your own. If you’re organized, find someone with design expertise (or vice versa) so nothing is overlooked.

On the wedding day, she wore a strapless lace Dana Harel gown with intricate detailing, paired with a delicate veil and borrowed jewelry. “I knew it was the one when my mom started crying,” Amanda shared. Later, she changed into a pearl-embellished Watters mini dress for dancing.

Parsa matched the elegance with a custom Suit Supply tuxedo and cufflinks gifted by Amanda’s parents. For their rooftop portraits, they shared private vows–an intimate moment away from the crowd.

A Persian Ceremony at Instituto Allende

Their Instituto Allende wedding ceremony was filled with lush florals that looked as though they grew naturally from fountains and trees. The highlight was the Persian Sofreh Gghd table, symbolizing abundance, sweetness, and family blessings.

“Several married women took turns grinding sugar above our heads to sweeten the marriage,” Amanda shared. Poems were read in both Persian and Spanish before they exchanged vows, blending their cultures seamlessly.

As they recessed, a mariachi band played Amanda’s favorite song, “Sabor a Mí.”. Giant dancing puppets resembling the couple–known as mojigangas–joined cocktail hour, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening.

An Instituto Allende Wedding Reception Hidden Behind the Murals

Guests were surprised when the reception space revealed itself, a breathtaking courtyard with views of the Parroquia. The tented ceiling dripped with magenta florals and bronze lanterns, while candlelit tables created a romantic atmosphere.

Special touches included a live first dance song performed by a close friend, hookahs for guests, and tequila bottles entrusted to table captains to keep the party going, a beloved Mexican tradition. They also included a Persian knife dance before the cake cutting.

Shop Hanging Lanterns:

“It was very helpful for a select few close family and friends to know the run of the show,” Amanda noted. “They were able to guide others so we weren’t constantly fielding questions.”

Lessons Learned From Planning a Destination Wedding

Looking back, Amanda and Parsa say the best decision they made was leaning into who they are as a couple and letting that guide every choice. Their Instituto Allende wedding became more than just a party. It was a reflection of their love for one another, their families, and the cultures that shaped them.

Couple’s advice: “Decide early on what matters most to you and invest there,” Amanda said. “For us, it was florals, food, and fashion. Everything else can be simplified, and you’ll still end up with a day that feels completely yours.”

When Lisa and Ryan decided to say “I do,” they didn’t want timelines, guest lists, or the usual wedding day whirlwind. They wanted quiet. Beauty. A setting that felt bigger than themselves. That search led them back to the place where their love story deepened—Iceland.

Their journey began in 2020 while working as nurses during the pandemic. Just weeks into dating, they watched the series Down to Earth and were captivated by the wild, untouched scenery featured in one episode. Lisa booked flights that same night, and six weeks later they were exploring the Ring Road. One night beneath the Northern Lights, Ryan said “I love you” for the first time.

So when it came time to choose a wedding location, there was no debate. An elopement in Iceland was the only choice. They picked Reynisfjara Beach and Solheimajokull Glacier, two breathtaking backdrops that capture the country’s nickname, “the land of fire and ice.” Rather than building a full vendor team, they hired just one person. Junebug vendor Christina Raytsiz whose talent, warmth, and transparent pricing made her an easy yes. “She was more than a photographer,” Lisa said. “She helped us plan, pick locations, suggest attire, and even brought us hand warmers.”

What We Love About This Elopement in Iceland

  • The couple returned to the country where Ryan first said “I love you”
  • A color palette chosen specifically to pop against Iceland’s moody scenery
  • Their photographer doubled as a planner, location scout, and stylist
  • A sunrise vow exchange on a rock overlooking Reynisfjara’s black sand beach
  • Post-ceremony pizza in downtown Vik, still in wedding attire

Turning One Trip Into a Vacation, Wedding, and Honeymoon

Because they had already booked flights to Iceland for November, they folded their wedding into that trip, turning it into a three-in-one—vacation, wedding, and honeymoon. “It was for a fraction of the cost of doing each separately,” Ryan explained. They funneled their budget into what mattered most to them, photography, attire, and experiences, while keeping the venue free.

To make the day stress-free, they got ready together at their Airbnb, helping each other with final touches before heading to their first look. The only timeline was the sun.

A Vow Exchange as Intimate as It Gets

At sunrise, their photographer, Christina, positioned them on a rock formation overlooking the black sand beach. The golden light hit their faces as they read their vows. Just the two of them, the ocean, and the waves crashing below.

“We could authentically be ourselves, without the nervousness of reading our deepest promises in front of a crowd,” Lisa said.

Celebrating Their Elopement in Iceland With Pizza in Wedding Attire

After hiking the glacier for photos, hunger set in. Still in wedding attire, they ducked into Halldorskaffi in downtown Vik, where the staff baked them a fresh pizza and celebrated their day with them. “We laughed the entire time, changing into hiking clothes in the bathroom. It was the best pizza and service we’ve ever had,” Ryan recalled.

What They Wish Every Couple Knew About Eloping

For Lisa and Ryan, there’s nothing they would change. “Focus on what you value together,” Lisa advised. “The hair will fall, makeup will fade, food will be eaten, and decor will come down. But the photos, words, memories, and marriage will last a lifetime.”

Jamie and Melony Bascom’s love story began with a spark and a few serendipitous missteps. They met in early 2017 through a mutual friend and instantly clicked, but they didn’t exchange numbers. Months later, Jamie spotted Melony again and asked for her number—but his phone died before the call went through. “We kept missing each other,” Jamie shared. “But once I finally reached out on social media and we had our first date, that was it. We’ve been together every day since.”

With shared Caribbean heritage—Jamie’s family from Guyana and Melony’s from the Dominican Republic—and a deep connection rooted in friendship, they knew early on they were meant to build a life together. After a cozy holiday proposal in Manhattan, they set out to plan the destination wedding of their dreams in just nine months. What transpired was an Italian villa wedding filled with intimacy, beauty, and meaningful moments.

Featured Vendor:

Luigi Reccia

What We Love About this Italian Villa Wedding:

  • A full week spent together under one roof in a stunning Italian villa
  • The couple prioritized guest comfort, covering accommodations and meals themselves
  • A playful welcome party featuring a poolside gathering and pizzas fresh from a brick oven
  • Guests arrived at the ceremony in coordinated pastels by family, creating a beautiful “kaleidoscope” of color
  • Loved ones played meaningful roles in the ceremony, ensuring everyone felt included

Planning an Intimate Destination Wedding in Italy

“We always knew we wanted an intimate and romantic wedding—something that felt effortless but still really special,” Melony shared. “When we found Domus Laeta, it was over. The venue really did the talking. It had the most breathtaking views, charming rooms, and this natural old-world beauty that didn’t need much else.”

Although planning a wedding abroad can be daunting, Melony took the lead. “I actually really enjoyed being hands-on,” she said. “But I also had so much help from Angela, the villa’s wedding coordinator. She connected us with vendors who totally understood the kind of day we were envisioning: romantic, relaxed, and centered around family.”

With limited time and the added complexity of international logistics, the couple leaned into trusting local experts. “The photographers—Luigi Reccia and his team, Raffaele and Alessandro—were amazing. They didn’t just capture the weekend, they became part of it,” Jamie added. “They had this calming presence that made us both feel at ease.”

Prioritizing People and Experiences Over Perfection

The couple’s number one priority? Their guests. “We wanted our family and friends to just show up and enjoy,” Jamie said. “A lot of them were traveling internationally with kids, and we didn’t want anyone to feel stressed.” Melony and Jamie covered accommodations, meals and transportation for all of their guests, and even planned a sailing trip to Capri as part of the weeklong festivities.

“The villa had more rooms than we had guests, which made it feel like a huge, cozy home we all shared for the week,” Melony said. “We were really intentional about investing in comfort, hospitality, and shared experiences over details that would only last a day.”

Welcome Party with Wood-Fired Pizza

The celebrations began with a laidback welcome party the day before the wedding. “We had a local pizzeria owner come in and make pizza in the villa’s outdoor brick oven,” Melony shared. “It was the perfect way to kick things off—kids running around, everyone catching up, no pressure. Just good food and good company.”

That afternoon, the couple snuck away for portraits in the town of Giungano. “It was so peaceful,” Jamie said. “Just walking the streets, taking in the views, and getting to be together before all the excitement.”

Wedding Day Fashion with a Personal Twist

Jamie’s look was all about classic tailoring with a splash of personality. “I went full James Bond,” he joked. “Classic black tux, real bow tie—which took me weeks to master—and black patent Christian Louboutins with red soles. I even brought new barber gear to groom myself and my brothers.”

Melony found her dress early in the process. “It was actually the first dress I tried on,” she said. “It was everything I imagined—lace, fitted, romantic with a long train and veil. I wanted to feel like myself, but elevated. And I couldn’t do it without Jimmy Choo.”

As a fun and meaningful detail, guests were asked to dress in soft pastel colors, with each family choosing their own hue. “Jamie’s mom called it a kaleidoscope,” Melony smiled. “It created the most beautiful, organic color story throughout the day.”

A Heartfelt Ceremony

Rather than a traditional first look, the couple opted for a quiet moment together before the ceremony. “We met back-to-back in a corridor of the villa,” Jamie said. “Just holding hands, taking a deep breath. It gave us a second to be present together before everything started.”

Their ceremony, held beneath a vine-covered stone arch in the garden, was full of heartfelt moments and meaningful roles. “Every single family member played a part,” Melony said. “Jamie’s dad was our officiant. Our moms held our vow books. Our siblings and godchildren helped with the rings and the aisle. We wanted our families to feel as included as we did.”

Domus Laeta stole the show with its weathered stone, sprawling gardens, and historic charm. “The courtyard had this arch covered in vines that looked like something out of a movie,” Melony said. “That’s where we had our ceremony. It needed almost no decor—it was already perfect.”

Their Best Advice

Reflecting on the week, Jamie and Melony have no regrets. “We wouldn’t change a thing, honestly,” Jamie said. “Every decision led us to that exact experience.”

Their advice to other couples? “Prioritize what matters to you as a couple,” Melony said. “You don’t have to do everything. You just have to do what feels true. The more personal it is, the more magical it becomes.”

Emilee and Landon’s wedding in Iceland was anything but conventional. With no wedding party, a small guest list, and design decisions rooted in intention rather than tradition, they built a day that reflected who they are—quietly adventurous, deeply thoughtful, and drawn to beauty that doesn’t try too hard. From the moment guests stepped off a bus at a waterfall wedding ceremony site to the last bite of a five-course reception dinner under the midnight sun, every detail reflected the couple’s intentional approach to love and celebration.

But before Iceland, there was Colorado—and a pandemic.

“We met on Hinge and connected right away,” Emilee shared. “Our first date was effortless—we talked for hours. A couple of months later, the world shut down, and we ended up in each other’s bubble.” That unexpected stillness gave them the space to explore nature, build a foundation, and discover a love that felt both easy and real.

The original plan was to get married in Colorado. But something didn’t feel quite right. “It eventually became overwhelming,” Emilee said. “I wanted something small and intimate, while Landon wanted to celebrate with those closest to us. Iceland had always held a special place in my heart—I had visited before and fallen in love with its beauty.”

They pivoted to a destination wedding with 42 guests and never looked back. Together, they envisioned a wedding that felt like “stepping into a dream—whimsical, natural, and full of quiet magic.” With the invaluable support of their planner, Pink Iceland, and photographers Styrmir + Heiðdís, the end result couldn’t have been a more perfect reflection of their vision.

What We Love About this Iceland Destination Wedding:

  • No theme–just the feeling of Iceland personified
  • A floral aesthetic inspired by Emilee’s colorful Rue de Seine Rider gown
  • A small guest list allowed for meaningful splurges
  • The post-ceremony grazing picnic in place of a standard cocktail hour
  • Five-course dinner at a cozy Icelandic restaurant

Infusing Meaning into the Details

“We weren’t following a theme or trend—we were chasing a feeling,” Emilee explained. Inspired by the landscape, the couple embraced organic elements that felt native to Iceland. In the simplest of terms, Zophia Flowers worked with the natural surroundings instead of competing with them. “Lupine surrounded us at the ceremony site. The florals felt like they were always meant to be there.”

The color palette echoed both the environment and Emilee’s dress: soft blush, dusty rose, sequoia green, and earthy neutrals.

Stationery helped tie it all together, with wax seals, silk ribbons, and watercolor botanicals. “Every detail was a love letter—to our guests, to Iceland, and to each other.” Emilee and Landon worked closely with their stationer, Amy Elizabeth Artistry, to custom design every piece of the invitation suite and day-of paper. The illustrations told the story of their relationship—bougainvillea for their Amalfi Coast engagement, a mountain motif for their shared love of adventure, and even a sketch of their pup. These personal touches appeared everywhere, from wrapping paper to menus to welcome notes, making the experience feel deeply reflective of their story.

Wedding Day Fashion

“My dress was the first I tried on, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” Emilee shared. “It had color, movement, and a floral pattern that somehow matched the wrapping paper our stationer had designed for our save-the-dates. Choosing it surprised me—I never thought I’d wear color. But it felt serendipitous. It completely matched the vision I had for the day and the landscape around us. It felt very in harmony with Iceland.”

Shop Emilee’s bridal style:

Because the dress had so much personality, Emilee kept everything else simple—soft hair and makeup, and no heavy accessories.

Landon wore a brown suit that mirrored the earth tones of the Icelandic landscape and complemented Emilee’s dress perfectly. There wasn’t a formal wedding party, but the entire group embraced the moody tones and natural textures, making everything feel cohesive and effortless.

A Private Waterfall Wedding Ceremony

The magical ceremony took place at Írárfoss, a secluded waterfall tucked into the southern countryside. “It felt wild and magical,” Emilee shared. “Behind us was the waterfall, with seabirds flying overhead and mist rising around us. It felt wild and magical.”

The officiant was Sam, one of Landon’s best friends, adding a deeply personal layer to the already moving setting.

Transition from Ceremony to Reception

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a light picnic while Emilee and Landon ventured off for a private photo session. The couple stopped at a black sand beach, a field of wild lupine, and right up close to the thunderous Skógafoss waterfall. “It was otherworldly,” Emilee recalled.

Meanwhile, guests boarded the bus for a short sightseeing tour, including a stop at Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. The day unfolded with the same quiet, expansive energy as the landscape around them.

An Intimate, Elevated Dinner in Reykjavik

The reception took place at Matur og Drykkur, a cozy restaurant in Reykjavik known for its modern Icelandic cuisine. Because the guest count was small, the couple served a five-course plated dinner paired with signature cocktails. “Everything felt dainty, intentional, and warm—just how we imagined it.”

The mood was romantic and slightly enchanted, made even more surreal by Iceland’s midnight sun. “It never fully got dark,” she said. “Everyone was laughing at how the sun was still out at 2 a.m. It gave the whole night this timeless, dreamy energy.”

Trusting the Process (and the Place)

The day began with a slight hiccup: a road closure delayed the bus bringing guests to the ceremony. But instead of letting the moment throw them off, Emilee and Landon embraced it. “Our planner popped open some champagne, and we had an extra hour with our photographer to bop around nearby locations. It calmed our nerves and gave us some amazing photos.”

Planning from another country wasn’t without its challenges. “The biggest challenge was not having seen any of the locations in person. It was a leap of faith to plan from a distance and ask 40+ people to fly across the world. But we trusted our planner and took on the mindset of, ‘Whatever happens, it will be wonderful.’”

They partnered with Pink Iceland, a Junebug-approved planner with deep local ties. “We shared our vision, and they came back with thoughtful, aligned vendor suggestions. They truly cared, and it showed.”

Advice for Couples Planning Their Own Dream Wedding

“Do whatever you want to do,” Emilee advises. “Forget what a wedding is supposed to look like. There’s no one way to do it. Our day was perfect because it felt like us—not because we followed tradition.”

Whether you’re planning an Iceland destination wedding, a waterfall wedding ceremony, or a dinner under the stars, Emilee and Landon’s Iceland celebration is a reminder that meaning matters more than rules—and that when you listen to your intuition, the magic finds you.

What happens when you combine the warmth of a close-knit gathering with the breathtaking beauty of Provence? For Karli and Kurt, it meant hosting a South of France wedding that felt more like a vacation with their favorite people than a traditional event. With just 16 guests and a private villa near Toulon as their backdrop, they planned a week-long celebration that was intimate, stylish, and deeply personal.

From the start, the couple envisioned something simple yet elegant—an atmosphere that felt relaxed but refined, and most of all, true to who they are. With the help of their planner and Junebug vendor Wonder Events, they brought that dream to life through thoughtful details, timeless design, and a vendor team selected with care.

What We Love About This South of France Wedding:

  • A courtyard ceremony where guests took turns “blessing” the couple’s rings
  • A thoughtfully styled dinner where every detail—from the flowers to the tableware—reflected the couple’s refined yet relaxed vision.
  • Personal touches like parasols for shade and a croquembouche tower for dessert
  • The couple’s decision to celebrate slowly, surrounded by loved ones over an entire vacation week

Designing a Relaxed Yet Elegant Destination Celebration

Karli and Kurt kicked off their South of France wedding plans by securing a private villa just outside Toulon. A space that felt comfortable and private, yet still elevated enough to host such a meaningful event. “They wanted something that felt like home,” their planner shared. “The location gave them space to be present with their guests and enjoy every moment.”

With guidance from Wonder Events, the couple worked closely with a curated group of local vendors for florals, catering, beauty, and more. The planning process was designed to be stress-free, with their planner offering support from start to finish: “They simply chose the vendors they felt most connected to, both personally and financially.”

Creating Ceremony Moments That Felt Meaningful and Personal

One of the most touching moments of the day was the ceremony, held in the villa courtyard near a central stone fountain. With the sun casting soft light on the cobblestones, Karli and Kurt stood hand-in-hand as one of their best friends officiated.

In a beautiful nod to togetherness, their wedding bands were passed from guest to guest, each person silently blessing the rings before they were exchanged. It was a simple act, but one that gave their intimate guest count even deeper meaning.

Putting Dinner at the Heart of the Celebration

While every part of their South of France wedding felt intentional, the couple’s top priority was the reception. Set outdoors against the villa’s warm-toned facade, the long wooden table was styled with soft linens, taper candles, and artful clusters of seasonal flowers in pastel hues. Each place setting was layered with care—from knotted napkins and hand-painted plates to green glass goblets that added a subtle pop of color.

Shop the Tablescape:

The meal concluded with a croquembouche tower, a classic French wedding dessert of cream-filled choux pastries stacked in a cone and bound with caramel. It was a sweet ending to a day rooted in connection and joy.

Real Advice From Junebug Vendor Wonder Events

Wonder Events shared one final insight: “Karli and Kurt knew what they wanted from the beginning. It wasn’t about putting on a show—it was about curating a meaningful experience. And because of that, everything fell beautifully into place.”

The couple later left this heartfelt review:

“We cannot say enough good things about our experience with Noella. From the moment we started working with her to plan our wedding in the South of France, she made everything incredibly easy… Our expectations were high, but Noella exceeded them in every way. If you’re looking for a wedding planner who will go above and beyond to bring your vision to life, look no further. We would recommend Noella a thousand times over!”

When makeup artist and TikTok creator Natalia began dreaming of her wedding, she pictured gelato carts, candlelight, and warm Tuscan air. So after 11 years with her partner Patricio, the couple left their hometown of Monterrey behind and brought that vision to life with an intimate Italian castle wedding at Castello di Bibbione.

“I wanted a typical Italian wedding,” Natalia shared. “Warm colors, Italian music, good food and wine—but also something really simple and authentic.”

With just a small guest list, a trusted planner, and two showstopping bridal dresses, Natalia and Patricio’s celebration blended personal touches with timeless romance. Proof that less can be so much more.

What We Love About This Italian Castle Wedding:

  • The breathtaking views and rustic charm of Castello di Bibbione
  • Natalia’s two unique Guardiola Bridal gowns—one for the ceremony, one for the celebration
  • The emotional moment when the priest honored Natalia’s grandmother during the vows
  • A cocktail hour filled with regional dishes, Italian drinks, and live music
  • The calm energy Natalia carried, even when wedding-day traffic caused a late arrival

Choosing Italy for a Small Yet Unforgettable Celebration

From the start, Natalia knew she wanted a destination wedding. “I wanted a small wedding, and I thought about Italy because it’s very romantic,” she said. “The first thing I booked was the wedding planner.”

That decision set the tone for everything. With full trust in her planner’s eye and vendor suggestions, Natalia focused her energy on just three things: the venue, food, and photography. The result? A heartfelt and visually stunning Italian castle wedding that felt as special to their guests as it did to them.

“Our guests told us they’d never attended a wedding that was so beautiful and unique,” Natalia shared.

A Church Ceremony Full of Meaning and Emotion

Held in a nearby church, Natalia and Patricio’s ceremony carried extra emotional weight. The day before their wedding, Natalia’s beloved grandmother passed away. During the ceremony, the priest honored her memory in front of family and friends.

“It was very emotional,” Natalia said. “But also very calming.” Even when unexpected traffic delayed her arrival to the church, she stayed composed. “The priest wasn’t in a rush. That helped a lot.”

Two Dresses, One Confident Bride

As a makeup artist with an eye for detail, Natalia approached her wedding looks with intention. She chose two gowns from Guardiola Bridal, each with a distinct feel for different parts of the day.

For the church ceremony, she wore an off-the-shoulder satin gown with long sleeves and a full skirt. The structure of the dress balanced classic elegance with a bit of drama, and her long veil added to the timeless look as she walked through the streets of Florence.

For the reception, she switched to a second dress: a strapless, form-fitting gown covered in delicate floral appliqué. Paired with a neck scarf and soft ponytail, the look felt lighter, more relaxed, and ready for a night of dancing.

Junebug Tip: Wanting to add a little extra touch to your bridal look? A neck scarf or shawl could be just the right accessory.

An Italian Castle Wedding Reception With Heart and Flavor

After the ceremony, guests returned to Castello di Bibbione for a relaxed and festive reception. The couple organized a cocktail hour featuring local bites, traditional drinks, and Italian music that set the mood.

Dinner was held in the castle’s stone courtyard under a canopy of string lights. Long tables were set with neutral linens, gold-rimmed glassware, and soft-toned florals in peach, blush, and ivory. Tall glass taper candle holders added a warm glow as the evening progressed.

The atmosphere was casual yet refined. No over-the-top styling, just thoughtful details that let the venue’s rustic beauty shine. One of the standout moments was the gelato cart that rolled in after dinner, giving guests a sweet (and very Italian) way to cool down and mingle.
